“Never Look Away”

A film by Florian Henckel Donnersmarck

Nominated for 2019 Best Foreign Film

“Never Look Away” is a mesmerizing, compulsively watchable film. Written and directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck — best known for his masterful 2006 drama “The Lives of Others” — this meditation on art, memory and meaning is an exploration of the postwar psyche of the filmmaker’s native Germany. Here, Donnersmarck considers the life and early career of painter Gerhard Richter, whose autobiography and subject matter have intersected with the most seismic dislocations of 20th-century Germany to a confounding and occasionally breathtakingly coincidental degree. The film’s fictional protagonist, Kurt Barnert, will be recognizable from the details of his life, aesthetic sensibility and development into one of the most important artists of his time. A brilliant blend of psychological insight, political drama, and artistic creativity “Never Look Away” will be a rich source of discussion for a psychoanalytic audience.

The movie is available starting May 14 on iTunes and Amazon instant video and on DVD and Blue Ray.

Please view the film before the meeting.

Location: 1912 Shippan Avenue, Stamford. CT 06902
