About the event:
Object relations theory, based in the early tenets of Freud’s psychoanalytic theory, emphasizes the early relationships we have with our caregivers. These early relationships, beginning in infancy, become internalized templates for shaping who we are, how we view ourselves and the world, and how we navigate relationships throughout the developmental trajectory. It is particularly useful in thinking about how a client might “show up” in therapy. This two-part seminar is intended to be an introduction to the theory of object relations. The first class will focus on the theorists themselves, including Melanie Klein, W.R.D. Fairbairn, and Margaret Mahler, with a particular emphasis on D.W. Winnicott. Part of the discussion will include how these theorists diverged from Freud’s drive theory. The second class will be focused on clinical practice, including the defenses addressed in an object relations treatment model; how these defenses might emerge clinically; and what interventions can be helpful to move the therapy, including working with countertransference. Clinical examples from one’s own practice will be encouraged to be discussed. If requested, further sessions can examine the object relations of consumerism, and the conceptualization of the environment as object and how these fit into the contemporary psyche.

Registration for this event closes on January 15th.
