The Talk

Face-to-face communication is too fast to fully capture with the naked eye. Video microanalysis slows down this powerful, largely out-of-awareness, moment-to-moment process and allows participants to see subtle, split second, complex patterns of relating that cannot otherwise be readily grasped. The program illustrates infant research through examples involving a gaze-avoidant infant and the origins of secure and disorganized infant attachment. It then applies the same microanalytic approach to adult treatment through examination of the first 30 seconds of an adult treatment session on Zoom.

Learning Objectives

As a result of this presentation, attendees will:

1. After this session, participants will be able to describe an example of split second coordination not visible to the naked eye in one mother-infant interaction.

2. After this session, participants will be able to describe an example of split second coordination not visible to the naked eye in one adult treatment session on Zoom.

3. After this session, participants will be able to describe an example of how microanalysis of the first 30 seconds of the session helped one therapist understand treatment themes that were sensed but not previously verbalizable.

Meet the Speaker

Beatrice Beebe, Ph.D., is a developmental/clinical psychologist, psychoanalyst, and Clinical Professor of Psychology (in Psychiatry) at Columbia University Medical Center/New York State Psychiatric Institute. Her research program has focused for four decades on video and audio microanalysis of mother-infant face-to-face communication, including dyadic regulation, attachment, and the effects of maternal depression and anxiety. Her work has used microanalysis as a “social microscope” to identify patterns of contingent relating, and she has extended this perspective to clinical treatment and video-feedback work. These experiences directly support the program’s focus on split-second coordination in infant interaction and adult treatment.
